Estradiol is critical in maintaining bone structure and decreasing osteoclastic activity (pac-man like eating of bone) which destroys bone, but also important, and possibly more important for bone protection is progesterone and testosterone. Multiple studies have shown that synthetic estrogen will reduce bone loss.
Bio-identical Estradiol seems to decrease the risks associated with the
synthetics, while providing the same benefits. Natural Progesterone builds bone, as opposed to estrogen that prevents bone loss.
We see a loss of bone mass in females, as young as 50 years old, because they have
had a deficiency of a the hormone identified as a major bone builder (Progesterone) for 10 – 15 years.
Screening for bone loss should be done earlier to catch this, instead of waiting until they are 50 years old. Testosterone increases hip density, and bone mineral density,
as it is almost a major contributor to bone growth. Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone
are all important components in maintaining proper bone density and it
is critical to supplement them as the body's ability to produce them
decreases over time.
